Overview

The project required the creation of a 3D puzzle with a minimum of five interlocking pieces. A key aspect of the design challenge was to integrate a meaningful representation of Canadian symbolism within the puzzle. This could include elements such as iconic cultural symbols, national landmarks, or themes that reflect Canada's heritage, identity, or natural beauty. The goal was to not only create a functional and engaging puzzle but also to evoke a sense of connection to Canadian culture and identity through its design.
After discussion with the team, our vision was to design and print a cute bear candy dispenser.
  • Why the bear and the goose? Charm and Canadian symbolism
  • Our puzzle is going to be fusion of creativity and functionality

Ideation

  1. Individual ideations and a group discussion for a final project idea
  2. Finalized details on how the puzzle pieces connect
  3. Ensured that the project criteria are met and the assembled puzzle will be functional

Prototype + Refine

Design process: Solidworks Design
Everyone was responsible for a unique partDetecting interferences to ensure that the pins fit into the holes and that all the parts fit together correctly - SolidWorks assembly was an iterative process.Reworking the internal candy drop mechanism - just press the goose button!

Design process: 3D Printing
  • Setting up for the 1st time in Z-SUITE: 21 hours printing time
  • Scaling down: 11.5 hours
1st print: Incorrect layout caused challenges
2nd print: Candy drop still didn't work and print error
3rd print: New connecting pins and push mechanism!

Then, we had to file the pins and drill the holes to remove the plastic supports created during printing. The pieces of the candy-dispensing bear puzzle can now be assembled and disassembled with ease.

Takeaways

  • Check supports when slicing in Z-SUITE: Ensure excess plastic is easily removable.
  • Consider technical aspects: Don't just think about creativity and design.
  • Measurements matter: Double-check dimensions to avoid the need for reprints.
  • Iterative process: First idea needs adjustments for successful creation.

Future Iterations

  • Additional bear features like claws and teeth.
  • Ability to drop larger candies.
  • Resolve the issue of the push pin being too large inside the bear, requiring it to be shaken to release the candy.
  • Incorporate a sound effect to enhance the overall experience when candy drops.
